The pure earth leakage circuit breaker is used to protect people, not systems. The moment the person goes to touch it, it creates a circuit with the ground. The current instead of staying in the household circuit, uses the human body to go to ground.
The residual current device, also called a circuit breaker, is a device in your electrical system. It is capable of opening the circuit, that is, shutting off the power supply, the moment the current accidentally dissipates.
A pure residual current circuit breaker offers protection in case of current leakage but not in case of overvoltage. Instead, the circuit breaker is required for this type of problem.
For the type B earth leakage circuit breaker, tripping is assured as for type F and for the following types of suddenly or slowly increasing applied differential currents:
- Sinusoidal alternating with frequencies up to 1000 hz.
- Alternating at rated frequency superimposed on a leveled direct current of 0.4 in or 10 ma whichever is higher. the differential circuit breaker must trip for a value of the alternating current not exceeding in
- Unidirectional pulsing superimposed on a levelized direct current (smooth direct current) of 0.4 in or 10 ma whichever is higher. the residual current circuit breaker must trip for a value of the alternating current not exceeding1.4 in for residual current circuit breakers with in > 10ma or not exceeding 2 in for residual current circuit breakers with in <= 10ma. (The value of the tripping differential current of 1.4 in or 2 in corresponds to the rms value of the half-wave of the unidirectional pulsing current)
- Unidirectional pushbuttons that can be generated by rectifier circuits fed by two phases. the differential switch must trip within the limits of 0.5 in and 2 in
- Unidirectional pushbuttons that can be generated by rectifier circuits fed by three phases. the residual current circuit breaker must trip within the limits of 0.5 in and 2 in
- Continuous leveled pulses produced by polyphase circuits. the residual current circuit breaker must trip within the limits of 0.5 in and 2 in.
