The pure earth leakage circuit breaker is used to protect people and not the equipment. The moment a person goes to touch it, it creates a circuit with the earth. The current instead of remaining in the domestic circuit, uses the human body to go to earth.

The residual current circuit breaker, also called circuit breaker, is a device in your electrical system. It is able to open the circuit, i.e. to interrupt the supply of energy, when the current is accidentally lost.

A pure residual current circuit breaker offers protection in case of current leakage but not in case of overvoltage. For this type of problem, a circuit breaker is required instead.

For the earth leakage circuit breaker type B the intervention is assured as for the type F and for the following types of differential currents applied suddenly or slowly increasing:

  • Sinusoidal alternating with frequencies up to 1000 hz.
  • Alternating at rated frequency superimposed on a direct current levelled at 0.4 i∆n or 10 ma, whichever is higher. the earth leakage circuit breaker must trip at a value of the alternating current not exceeding i∆n.
  • The residual current device must trip at an alternating current value not exceeding 1.4 i∆n for residual current devices with i∆n > 10ma or not exceeding 2 i∆n for residual current devices with i∆n <= 10ma. (the value of the tripping differential current equal to 1.4 i∆n or 2 i∆n corresponds to the rms value of the half-wave of the unidirectional pulsating current).
  • Unidirectional pushbuttons that can be generated by rectifier circuits fed by two phases. the differential switch must trip within the limits of 0.5 i∆n and 2 i∆n.
  • Unidirectional pulses that can be generated by rectifier circuits fed by three phases. the residual current circuit breaker must intervene within the limits of 0.5 i∆n and 2 i∆n.
  • Continuous level switches produced by polyphase circuits. the residual current circuit breaker must trip within the limits of 0.5 i∆n and 2 i∆n.
