The surge arrester is an instrument that can be mounted inside the electrical panel, therefore upstream of the home system. Its use allows you to put in protection the electrical system on which it is installed.
The surge arrester will protect the entire system from surges, surges and peaks of electricity that may come from the operator of the power line, or from atmospheric phenomena such as lightning. These power anomalies can cause serious damage to the devices connected to the outlets.
A power surge can cause the hardware of a PC to break, or short circuit the boards of smartphones, tablets and home appliances. In the event that the flow of energy suddenly increases dramatically, human life can even be at risk due to electrocution.
To prevent this from happening, it is therefore advisable to fit a surge protector.
Surge arresters are divided into three classes:
In class 1 we find devices to be used in areas where adverse weather phenomena such as thunderstorms and lightning usually insist (for example in the mountains). In this case the arrester is mounted in the electrical panel and can withstand several surges without being damaged. The discharge takes place in 350 microseconds, so that the excess energy does not reach the system.
In class 2 there are surge arresters that protect the system from surges and spikes that may be caused by maintenance work on the line by the operator.
In class 3, on the other hand, we find those devices that offer even greater protection: in this case, the surge arrester is installed directly at the electrical outlets present in the home.
